Hi Priya, The next step is the advance of ₹30,000 (50% of ₹60,000). Please pay it today or tomorrow so I can hold your start date. The balance of ₹30,000 is due on delivery. I can only start once the advance has arrived. You can pay via UPI ID aarav@okaxis. After you pay, please send me a screenshot or the UTR so I can match it. Thank you. Aarav
Check before you send
- Check the amounts: total ₹60,000, advance ₹30,000, balance ₹30,000.
- Check the payment details character by character. One wrong letter in a UPI ID sends the money elsewhere.
- Say clearly what happens after the advance: when work starts and what the first deliverable is.
- When the money arrives, confirm it in your bank or UPI app before you start.

When the client wants to pay at the end
Hi Priya, I understand you would like to pay at the end. For a project this size I take a part payment first. How about 30% now (₹18,000) and the rest on delivery? Work starts as soon as the first payment is in. Thanks, Aarav
What to include in an advance payment request
- The amount, and the percent of the total it is, so nobody has to work it out.
- What it is for: the project name, so the payment is easy to match later.
- How to pay: a UPI ID, a payment link or bank details.
- What happens after: when work starts, and when the first deliverable is due.
- The balance: how much is left and when it is due.
How much advance should you ask for?
There is no rule. Many freelancers ask for 30% to 50% upfront, and 50% now with 50% on delivery is common in India. Small jobs are often paid in full before work starts. Longer jobs are often split into milestones, for example 40% to start, 30% halfway and 30% on delivery.
Two Indian freelance guides describe the same pattern as common practice: Riffit's post on asking for 50% upfront and its guide to freelance payment terms in India. Both are written by an invoicing company, and they describe habits, not law. Pick what fits your work and your client, and put it in the proposal before work starts.
Tips for India: UPI, payment links and proforma invoices
- Type your UPI ID with care. One wrong letter sends the money to someone else.
- Check your bank or UPI app for the money before you start. A screenshot from the client is not the same as money received.
- Ask for the UTR or a screenshot so you can match the payment.
- A proforma invoice is only needed if the client's accounts team asks for one. Tax rules differ, so check with an accountant. This is not tax advice.
Client Kit does not make invoices or hold money. Your client pays you directly, then clicks "I've paid", and you confirm it once you see the money.
Get the advance on the same page as the signature
In Client Kit, the one link proposal, e-sign and payment tool, you pick an advance of 0, 30, 40 or 50 percent when you write the job. After your client signs, they see your UPI QR or payment link for the advance amount. Once you confirm it, they can pay the balance the same way. See it on the demo proposal. Frequently asked questions
How do I ask a client for an advance payment politely?
State it as part of the deal, not a favour. Give the amount, what it covers, how to pay, and when work starts. For example: "To begin, I take a 50% advance of ₹30,000. Work starts once it is received."
How much advance should a freelancer ask for?
There is no fixed rule. A common range is 30% to 50% upfront, and 50% advance with 50% on delivery is common in India. Small jobs are often paid in full upfront, and long jobs are often split into milestones.
Can I ask for advance payment on WhatsApp?
Yes. WhatsApp is fine for the request, and it is fast. Also put the advance in your written proposal so both sides have it on record.
What should an advance payment request message include?
The project name, total fee, advance amount, balance and when it is due, how to pay (UPI ID or payment link), and what happens once you receive it.
What if the client says they will pay everything at the end?
Offer a smaller advance or split the work into milestones. Say you start once the first payment arrives. If they refuse any advance, you decide whether the risk is acceptable.
Do I need to send an invoice for an advance payment?
Not always. Some clients, especially companies with an accounts team, ask for a proforma or advance invoice before releasing money. Ask them what they need. Tax rules vary, so check with an accountant. Client Kit does not create invoices.
Skip the chasing. Put the advance on the proposal.
With Client Kit, your client reads the scope, signs, and pays the advance to your UPI or your own payment link, all on one page. Client Kit takes no cut. Free plan: 3 sends a month, and it never expires.
Founder plan: $9 a month for the first 50 workspaces (priced in rupees in India, ₹749 a month).
Client Kit does not make invoices or hold money. Your client clicks "I've paid" and you confirm it. See pricing or the FAQ.
